Food Truck Friday

food truck friday june 2016

It seems like over the past few years, Lexington’s food scene has been growing exponentially. With all the countless local restaurants, the food trucks, the food festivals and events, it would be hard to disagree. There are so many hidden treasures that I think most people aren’t aware of. I mean just in July, there is Lexington Burger Week and Lexington Restaurant Week and in August, there is Crave. That’s not even considering all the other events that are taking place around the city and region.

I do my best to stay in the know about all the events taking place. At least, a lot of people tell me, I always know what is going on and/or asking for my suggestions on things to do or places to eat. There are dozens and dozens and dozens of events going on each week, but you just have to know about them.

This past week, I went to Food Truck Friday, which was on 100 Midland Avenue from 11am to 2pm in the parking lot of the Lexington Herald-Leader. The past dates were April 8 and June 10, but the upcoming dates are August 12 and October 14. Also, a portion of the proceeds from June 10 benefited the Humane Society . I am a huge animal lover and super passionate about animals, so this was a huge plus for me. This is also where I adopted both of my dogs from.

There was twelve food trucks in attendance (Bradford BBQ, Crank & Boom, Crazy About Cajun, Gastro Gnomes, HogFathers BBQ, JHS Catering, Jasmine Rice, Kentucky Strong BBQ, Mad Mike’s, Rick & Sons Hot Dogs, That’s How We Roll, and Whooo Wants Waffles).

It was so hard to pick which food truck to eat from, since all of them sounded delicious. I decided to go with comfort food. I decided to get popcorn chicken and fries, because I was craving french fries. Let’s be honest, I’ve never met a potato that I didn’t like (well except sweet potatoes, because just no hahah).

This came from Mad’s Mike food truck. I love food, trying new places, food trucks, and supporting local businesses. On the truck, it says it is a Veteran owned business, which is a plus in my book, especially since my husband is a Vet.

So about the food? It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! It was so tasty and yummy and a large portion (but hey, I’m not complaining!) I ate all of that up!

So, do you honestly think that on Food Truck Friday, I could just eat something savory? Psshh. I have to have some sweets too.

I always hate the question, “Savory or Sweet?” when people play “Would You Rather?” I’m like, why choose? Life is too short. Have both.

So, I present to you… The Smores waffle from Whooo Wants Waffles. It has chocolate, peanut butter, fluff, and a graham topping. It’s sticky. It’s gooey, and oh so tasty. I mean, just look at it! It tastes just like a smores! Since my friend and I had a big lunch from our food truck, we decided to share. Definitely enough for two!

Here I am rocking June’s My Kentucky Tee. For those that don’t know, it’s a t-shirt subscription box (only $15 a month) for those of living in the Commonwealth. Each month is related to Kentucky and Kentucky pride. They are also the softest shirts ever. You can check out their past shirts: here. I have every shirt that they have came out with ever since March 2015. I always love seeing which shirt will next month’s “tee of the month.” This is a company that I absolutely adore and love supporting! If you want to become a subscriber: email them at 1792@mykentuckytee.com and tell them I (Whitney Scheibel) sent you!

Hope to see you in August!

I love these kind of things. In NYC they have those in the city and I enjoy going and trying out new foods. BTW I love that subscription and wish they had one for my states.

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:46 am

I think it’s so cool! It’s the first time I have ever seen something like that. It’s a local company in Lexington that started it 🙂

  • Robin Rue June 16, 2016 at 5:49 am

I was at a food truck festival here in Massachusetts 2 weekends ago and pretty much ate my weight. There is always soooo much good food at those things.

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:46 am

Oh my gosh, I know! There was one food truck festival last fall, where you got to eat from 25 trucks for $25. It was awesome!

  • Yvonne Lo June 16, 2016 at 9:06 am

Good God!! That looks amazing!! I wonder if they’ll be popping by Alabama?

  • Emmy Jake June 16, 2016 at 12:33 pm

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:48 am

It was so tasty! It’s a local business here in Lexington. I thought it was so cool, and I’m glad I was able to support them from basically the beginning!

  • Joules (Pocketful of Joules) June 16, 2016 at 12:43 pm

This food truck event looks super great and the desserts are always what call my name. Looks like you all had a great time!

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:49 am

I love any chance I get to eat out of a food truck. Lots of them, you can find out some bars over the weekend. There’s so many of them here… You just have to know where they are during the week 🙂

  • Kristin C June 16, 2016 at 1:14 pm

I’ve always wanted to go somewhere like this, but never been. I think there is one near me, just haven’t found out where it is and gone yet.

  • Leslie@PeachyKeen June 16, 2016 at 1:19 pm

Our town has just started doing food truck Mondays and I’m thinking my son and I need to go. Maybe we’ll even take our family from out of town next week! All that food sounds so amazing! The S’mores waffle looks mouth watering good!

  • Lisa McDermott June 16, 2016 at 1:36 pm

i have yet to go to a huge food truck event! This is on my bucket list! all that food looks amazing!

  • Blythe A. June 16, 2016 at 1:57 pm

I’ve always wanted to try out one of these food truck events. Sadly, they don’t have one in my small area. I’m always amazed by the creativity that comes out of food trucks, and that waffle, yum.

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:53 am

That sucks 🙁 You should see all the food trucks here (there’s about 50+ here just in Lexington). Last year, I had one of the most amazing burgers that I’ve eaten. The burger was their signature Honey Bourbon Bison burger slider with grass fed bison, caramelized onions, bacon, Havarti cheese, honey butter bourbon glaze, on a yeast roll

A lot of ingredients in our local restaurants are local and/or farm to table!

  • Rachel Zampanti Langer June 16, 2016 at 3:16 pm

What a cool lunchtime event! I don’t think we have enough food trucks in our area to do something like this – maybe I should plan a road trip.

  • Angela Tolsma June 16, 2016 at 3:24 pm

oh gosh I love food trucks!! I always go to one for lunch during the farmers markets!! That waffle looks delicious!

  • Greta Hollar June 16, 2016 at 4:31 pm

Yummy! We have a food truck come every Friday to where I work. I love these trucks! I had the best turkey burger I’ve ever had from a food truck.

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:45 am

That’s so awesome! If I worked there where you do, I’d be eating there every Friday!

  • TheBalancedBelle June 17, 2016 at 1:31 am

I have that shirt too! Awesome that Lexington is getting a food truck scene. We have one here in San Diego but I haven’t made it out to it yet.

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 17, 2016 at 1:44 am

Cool! We have tons. There’s about 50 I can think of right offhand. There’s probably even more! I love food trucks!

  • Rebecca @ Happily the Hicks June 17, 2016 at 6:28 am

I LOVE food trucks! And those pictures of the food made my mouth start watering. YUM!

  • jillconyers June 17, 2016 at 7:34 am

A t-shirt subscription box is so cool. It’s festival season and that always means all the food in every variety.

  • Thuli Mac June 17, 2016 at 8:16 am

My goodness, that waffle looks like death!! Love love love! On my bucket list I have “to each waffles in Belgium” seriously! I love food trucks.

  • Heather June 17, 2016 at 8:19 am

I am pretty much starving now! We don’t have a lot of food trucks where I live, but I think they are working on changing that down on our riverfront.

  • Jessica Bradshaw June 17, 2016 at 8:25 am

I love food trucks!! The creativity is inspiring. Cute shirt too!!

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 21, 2016 at 1:26 am

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 21, 2016 at 1:27 am

It’s just an event that my city puts on. Last year, we had a food truck festival called the Feeder’s Cup (a play on the horse race, Breeder’s Cup) and we got to eat from 25 food trucks for $25!

  • Sierra June 17, 2016 at 11:55 am

YUM!!! I’m currently working up the plans in my head to make something like this happen in my home town.

  • Jessica Hughes June 17, 2016 at 12:22 pm

Last year, they had the Feeder’s Cup. You paid $25 and you got to eat from 25 food trucks. Hopefully, they will have it again this year! It was pretty cool!

  • Hilary Urban June 17, 2016 at 2:07 pm

Wow, I’m hungry now! That looks amazing! I would love to visit Kentucky and Lexington some day!

  • Lesha June 17, 2016 at 2:29 pm

I’m surprised Evansville doesn’t really have anything like this. That’s why I always look forward to visiting Lexington and Louisville. – HilLesha

  • Karin Rambo June 17, 2016 at 4:31 pm

Food trucks are so good!! They just make eating out so much more exciting!

  • Stephanie Clark June 18, 2016 at 1:14 am

We have a food truck festival we went to recently but the lines were ridiculous! The food was good thoUgh! I really hope we have more of those kind of events here in Jackson!

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 21, 2016 at 1:29 am

There always a lot of lines at ours too! Lots of them show up at events during the week (like Thursday Night Live), and some set outside of bars each weekend. There’s always a food truck somewhere you look!

  • Hannah Adkins June 18, 2016 at 10:23 am

This looks like an awesome event! I’m kinda jealous lol. We don’t have food trucks here in this small town, but I totally wish we did. Also I’m sad you don’t like sweet potatoes. I LOVE them! especially some good sweet potato fries, yum!

    • Whitney @ Fabulous in Fayette June 21, 2016 at 1:30 am

      🙁

I try several ways to make them. And when I go to the store to get some. My husband is like, ‘Stop trying to make sweet potatoes a thing. They suck hahaha.’ Sadly, I’d have to agree. Just give me regular russet or baking potatoes!

  • Cristina @triathlonmami June 18, 2016 at 10:43 am

OMG. that waffle looks delish. And what a great idea for a t-shirt subscription … you just gave me an aha moment. Yours look soft and cool, and i love their past designs (yes, checked it out). 🙂

  • amethystmoon June 18, 2016 at 9:23 pm

The food looks fabulous. I like the shirt subscription idea, too!

  • Teresa Laura | MCBL June 18, 2016 at 9:26 pm

Wow! Everything looks absolutely delicious. There are so many food trucks where I live in New York, but I never take the time to try any. Now, I feel like I should!

  • CourtneyLynne Storms June 20, 2016 at 9:27 pm

Omg can we say food porn?!?! I just love food trucks. Some of my all time favorite foods have come from the things lol

  • Crystal P July 6, 2016 at 1:46 pm

I love food trucks and I’m glad to find someone else who shares my non-love for sweet potatoes! YUCK!
