Things to Do in Lexington, Kentucky: The Week of February 24-March 2, 2018

We’ve finally made it through another week! We’ve had our ups and downs, regarding weather this week. One day it was 80 degrees and then the next it was 50 degrees, and now it’s raining! Can spring get here now?

You know the drill… it’s Friday, so I’ve gathered some events happening in Lexington in the upcoming week!

  • 5:15am: Body Back Bring a Friend Day at Fit4Mom Lexington (health/fitness): Want to see first-hand what the Body Back program is about? Join us for one of three FREE Body Back classes for a women-only workout, no kids, no excuses– just us working hard and cheering each other on! (Class also on Monday, February 19 at 8pm and Saturday, February 24 at 7am).
  • 8:30am Tour Keeneland Race Course (outdoors/kid friendly/horses): For guests interested in learning the history of Keeneland and an overview of operations for both racing and sales, guided walking tours are available. This outside walking tour with an experienced Tour Guide takes guests through the Keeneland Paddock and Grandstand, grounds, and when available, to the world-renowned Sales Pavilion. Following the trackside tour, fans are invited to visit the Keeneland Library, one of the world’s largest repositories of information related to the Thoroughbred.   • 8:30am: Yoga at the Museum at The Kentucky Horse Park (health/fitness/wellness): The Kentucky Horse Park’s International Museum of the Horse will present a new, free Yoga in the Museum series in 2018 with the partnership of Chelsey Reid of Red Horse Yoga in Georgetown, Ky., beginning January 25, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. These complimentary, hour-long community yoga classes will be held among the exhibits in the museum and will focus on grounding through breath and gentle movement in sequences that are welcoming to both beginner and experienced yogis. Participants should check in at the museum’s front desk upon arrival, and should bring a mat or towel, and water. (Recurring). 
  • 8:45am: Superhero Kid’s Yoga at SALA Studio (health/wellness/fitness/kid friendly): Kid’s Superhero Yoga is BACK! Are your superhero’s climbing the walls this winter? Do they need an outlet for their energy? Bring them to Superhero Yoga where we will focus on strength and building confidence. Class will be created for ages 5-10; however, siblings welcome. Dress your little as their fave caped crusader or real-life hero! Bring a mat and water bottle!
  • 9am: Tiny House Crafting at Cut and Paste Craft Studio (art/crafts): Have you ever wanted your own tiny house? One just perfect for a family of peg people, little ponies, shopkins, Lego creations and more? This house is 10 inches tall and 7 1/2 inches wide.   • 10am: Barre With Art at 21c Museum Hotel (health/wellness/fitness): S T R E T C H your horizons at 21c Museum Hotel Lexington’s weekly Saturday bare series. Flex those creative muscles as you work through a variety of barre poses in our contemporary art-filled spaces, then hit the bar at Lockbox for a mimosa. Sessions are just $10 at the door and are led by certified barre instructors from Elle Fitness featuring ElleBARRE. Class is 21+; Price includes mimosa. BYOM + cash only.
  • 10am: Yoga 101- Beginners Workshop at Love & Grace Yoga Studio (health/fitness/wellness): The Yoga 101 workshop is ideal for you if: You are new to yoga. Familiar with yoga but want to go deeper. Desire an in depth instruction of yoga poses. Want to know what a Christian yoga practice looks like. Each student will receive a pose breakdown manual to use during the workshop and take home.   • 11am: Balance & Brews | Nate’s on National & La Petite Delicat (health/wellness/fitness/food): Coffee & Yoga! Macarons & Yoga! We sold out our first event so sign up early to join us in our cozy yoga loft for practice and then chill with coffee, tea, and treats afterwards!   • 11am: Happy Tails Craft and Storytime at Brier Books (literature/cause): Listen to a story by Randi Mvros, author of Maggie and the Summer Vacation Show-and-Tell, make a craft, and play with adoptable kittens. A percentage of book sales benefits Kentucky SAVE.
  • 12pm: Acrovinyasa with Madison – beginner friendly and by donation (health/wellness/fitness): An all-level, 2-hour workshop offered on a donation/free basis from 12pm – 2pm the last two Saturdays of each month. This entire flow covers 90 asanas (45yoga & 45 acro) and introduces a wide variety of postures and transitions, originating from both the yoga and acrobatic traditions. Every air asana moves seamlessly from one to the next creating a continuous sequence. Each class will cover about 10 postures, from earth to air. A partner is not required, but bring your friends for more fun! (Recurring Saturdays).

  • 7pm: Wags And Drags at Venues of The Grand Reserve (cause): Presented by The Imperial Court of Kentucky – a fellow 501c3 nonprofit organization, the 8th Annual Wags and Drags to benefit Scott County Humane Society is truly a show fit for a queen!   • 10pm: StarDevils – Rockabilly at Lynagh’s Irish Pub (music): The StarDevils; Widely regarded as one of the best bands in traditional style rockabilly with their savage Rockabilly and Hillbilly boppin’ sounds. Having received 5 star reviews from Black Cat Rockabilly and Rockabilly Hall of Fame (to name a few) the bands live shows and CD’s are a must for any fan of traditional original Rockabilly.

We will have a few raffle items available as well as information about our Spring hike season.
  • 5pm: West Sixth Cerveza Can Launch at West Sixth Brewing (alcohol/party): Join us for the launch of the West Sixth Cerveza – our Mexican Lager – in six-pack cans!!   • 6pm: Forty Minutes to Glory at Brier Books (sports): In Forty Minutes to Glory, Doug Brunk presents an inside account of this celebrated squad and their championship season from summer pick-up games to the net-cutting ceremony in St. Louis. Brunk interviewed every surviving player, coach, and student manager from the 1977–1978 team and he shares unbelievable tales, such as how James Lee’s father talked him out of quitting. Brunk also reveals heart-wrenching moments, recounting the time when Jay Shidler traveled 150 miles to visit his seriously ill mother on the eve of the national semifinals game against Arkansas and how Scott Courts coped with his father’s death just days before the championship game against Duke.

  • 6pm: Stuarto’s In-Store, Hands-On Cooking Class at Stuarto’s Olive Oil Company (class/workshop): Late last year, we tested an in-store cooking class format at our Bowling Green location, with great success. We are pleased to announce that the initial two Lexington classes will feature Executive Chef James “Jake” Gaunce. Jake has an extensive cooking resume, having served as either the Executive or Sous Chef of the following well known eateries: Nick Ryan’s, Rossi’s, Murrays, the Danville Country Club and the Pasta Garage. There will be only eight cooking stations available per 2 person team at each class, so we anticipate that these will sell exceptionally fast (i.e. a total of 16 guests per evening).   • 7pm: Science of Lawn Care and Home Gardens at West Sixth Brewing (class/workshop): Brad Lee, Rick Durham, and Gregg Munshaw will each be giving a short talk on the topic of lawn care and home gardening. Talks include: “No P On My Lawn – Why I don’t and you shouldn’t either”, “Most home landscapes can be managed with a P free diet – some simple steps”, and “You don’t have to turn the turf under – green grass can be green.”

  • 8pm: Mindfulness Meditation at Centered (health/wellness/free): The Brick Sit House is a welcoming meditation community open to everyone. We’re dedicated to providing Lexington with a warm, secular environment in which to pursue modern mindfulness. What is modern mindfulness? Horticultural Technician Carrie Spry, from the UK Cooperative Extension Service, will be here to discuss growing early spring crops. This event is perfect for those interesting in starting a backyard garden and need a little more information which varieties to plant for this area, when to plant, and how to maintain.   • 6pm: Acro Fitness at Source On High (fitness/health/wellness): Learn skills from partner and solo acrobatics as you grow stronger and more flexible. Get ready to feel the release of all your daily tension and the stretch of muscles previously neglected as your skills and strength grows. No partner needed.   • 6pm: Cosmic Arcade presents The Lab at Al’s Bar (games): Welcome to The Lab! The Lab is Lexington’s premiere fighting game monthly from Cosmic Arcade! We will supply all the systems, setups and everything you need to play, but feel free to bring a controller that you prefer to play with. Our goal is to bring players together, make new friends, and run the best organized fighting tournaments in Kentucky. Come out and get these hands!

Love locally with Georgetown’s Love Your Downtown event! From Feb. 5-24, locals and visitors can pick up a FREE LYD passport at participating businesses in Downtown Georgetown. The Love Your Downtown passport encourages the public to visit local businesses in our downtown in efforts to receive passport stamps/signatures. After visiting 10 or more locations, participants can turn in their passport at one of the businesses to be entered to win a basket full of merchandise!
