I’ve kind of took a short hiatus, but I’m back with bringing y’all “Things to Do in Lexington, Kentucky: The Week Of…”

Monday, April 8, 2019

  • 8am: Nickels for Nonprofits at Whole Foods (cause): Seedleaf is partnering with Whole Foods Market this spring one nickel at a time! They have been busy sowing seeds and preparing growing beds in their 14 free u-pick community gardens and it costs them about a nickel to get each plant going in the greenhouse space. You can help them grow more by taking your own shopping bag to Whole Foods—we get five shiny pennies every time you do from April 1st till June 30th! (Recurring).
  • 8:45am: Monday Morning Community Yoga at Martine’s Pastries (health/wellness/fitness): Yoga instructor Erica House is leading a Monday morning community yoga practice for all upstairs in the shop. Erica’s donation based class is perfect for any age, level or ability. You’ll flow through a series of yoga poses guided by the breath, designed to create space while discovering self. She’s sure to to help make Monday mornings at Martine’s the most looked forward to time of the week
  • 11am: Mission Monday at Blue Stallion Brewing Co. (cause): Each Monday Blue Stallion Brewing donates 10% of taproom sales to Lexington area non-profits and on Monday, April 8 Mission Lexington will be featured. Join them for a great cause!
  • 11am: West Sixth Brewing Wooden Nickel & Bluegrass Pug Rescue at West Sixth Brewing (cause): WOODEN NICKEL at West 6th Brewing BLUEGRASS PUG RESCUE is the non-profit for the month of April!! Every time you buy a flight in one of their taprooms, you are presented with a Wooden Nickel that gives you the opportunity to give $1 to a local non-profit or use it for $1 off merchandise. The non-profit is different each month, This is just one of the many ways you can drink good beer and do good things (Recurring everyday until April 30).
  • 5pm: Monday FUNDay Spirit Night at Gold Star Chili – Palomar (cause): Come and enjoy some fabulous chili and help support Paul Laurence Dunbar band!
  • 6pm: The Lone Bellow TRIIIO /// Acoustic Tour at The Burl (music): I’m The Lone Bellow burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 2013. The Nashville-based trio, featuring Zach Williams (guitar/vocals), Kanene Donehey Pipkin (multi-instrumentalist/vocals), and Brian Elmquist (guitar/vocals), quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies, serious musicianship and raucous live performance —creating what NPR calls, earnest and magnetic folk-pop built to shake the rafters.In 2015,the band released Then Came The Morning, produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner. The album was nominated for an Americana Music Award and took the band to numerous late night shows including Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Show With David Letterman and Later…with Jools Holland among others. In 2017,The Lone Bellow returned with Walk Into A Storm, produced by legendary music producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson). Most recently, the band released The Restless EP, a self-produced collection of new material, covers, and reimagined acoustic recordings of previously released songs. Tickets available: HERE.
  • 6pm: Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny at Fayette Mall: Pet photos with the Easter Bunny will be taken during scheduled Pet Photo Nights from 6pm to 9pm on Mondays, April 1, 8, and 15th. Pets must be on a leash or in a carrier, and pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Please enter through the mall entrance next to Talbots. Pets will not be allowed in any area of the mall other than the designated Easter Bunny photo area. 
  • 6pm: Community Drumming Circle at Wild Fig Books and Coffee: Join Marcus L. Wilkerson and your Fig family for a community drumming circle Monday at 6pm and then stay to meet Feminista Jones and hear her read from her newest book “Reclaiming Our Space: How Black Feminists Are Changing the World From the Tweets to the Streets,” as part of Wild Fig hosts Feminista Jones.
  • 6pm: AnimeLEX – April at Al’s Bar of Lex: Anime, Drinks, and Good Times. Anime viewing at Al’s Bar is back in April. This bi-weekly event will happen every 2nd and 4th Monday of each month and feature new and classic anime. Catch a new show or start following our continuing series (Currently Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works).
  • 6:30pm: Paint Night at Pivot Brewing (art/crafts): Enjoy an evening of drinks and painting with friends or family! You will be guided through a beautiful floral canvas painting by a local artist while sipping on the drinks you love. Tickets available: HERE.
  • 7pm: Stan Brakhage: The Dante Quartet & Dog Star Man (16mm) at 21c Museum Hotel Lexington (art): This hand-painted work six years in-the-making (37 in the studying of The Divine Comedy) demonstrates the earthly conditions of “Hell,” “Purgatory” (or Transition) and “Heaven” (or “existence is song,” which is the closest I’d presume upon heaven from my experience) as well as the mainspring of/from “Hell” (HELL SPIT FLEXION) in four parts which are inspired by the closed-eye or hypnagogic vision created by those emotional states. Originally painted on IMAX and Cinemascope 70mm and 35mm, these paint-laden rolls have been carefully rephotographed and translated to 35mm and 16mm compilations by Dan Yanosky of Western Cine.
  • 7pm: Lost-themed trivia at Ethereal Brewing (games): Love Lost? Think you know more than The Others? Enjoy a brew or two and flex those bragging rights with some Lost-themed Trivia at Ethereal on April 8th at 7pm!
  • 7pm: Monday Night Trivia at Fusion Brewing (games): Monday Night Trivia Fusion Brewing. Trivia is brought to you by Local Trivia Action from 7pm to 9pm. Come out and have fun competing against other people/teams! While your here grab a bite from IP&J Cuban Food or grab just a snack of Lollie’s Beer Cheese made with Fusion Brewing Beer and served with pretzels. Either way we have something for you! 
  • 7pm: I Feel Stupid and Contagious 90s Trivia at Rock House Brewing (games): Remember the Macarena? Dread dial-up? Still use Windows 95? Stock up on slap bracelets? How many one-hit wonders can you name? Y2K? More like Y2Yay because it’s 90s trivia night!

  • 2pm: Tea Tuesday at Waveland: Looking for something fun, unique and different to do with a friend or a group? Waveland State Historic site is serving tea every Tuesday! Tea is served at 2 p.m. in the mansion on fine china. All teas include a program, savory food, not to mention the delicious tea served by period dressed interpreters. Once you are finished with the tea enjoy a tour of the Waveland Mansion. A unique one-of-a-kind experience! Reservations are required. Call today to schedule your tea at Waveland! 859-272-3611.   • 6pm: Acro Fitness at Source On High (health/fitness/wellness): Learn skills from partner and solo acrobatics as you grow stronger and more flexible. They will guide you through proper physical techniques that will allow you to practice confidently and with ease all while have a great time.Get ready to feel the release of all your daily tension and the stretch of muscles previously neglected as your skills and strength grows. No partner needed. All levels welcome. No experience with Acro Yoga required.
  • 7pm: Tuesday Night Live Team Trivia at Bear & The Butcher (games): Live team trivia. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and best team name.
  • 7pm: Drum Circle at Rock House Brewing (music): Music!

  • 8pm: Music Bingo at Drake’s (games): Come play music bingo and win prizes! A fun take on traditional bingo. Players are given a bingo card where numbers have been replaced with song names, music titles or both.   • 10am: Friends Spring Book Sale at Lexington Public Library: It’s that time of year again! Their annual spring book sale will have thousands of books at rock bottom prices! And all to benefit the Lexington Public Library! (Also, on April 11-14 at 10am).
  • 11am: Keeneland Spring Meet: Keeneland’s 2019 Spring Race Meet opens Thursday, April 4, and continues through Friday, April 26. No racing will be held on Mondays or Tuesdays, or Easter Sunday, April 21. Gates open at 11am with first post at 1:05 pm daily, with the exception of opening Thursday, April 4 when gates open at 1pm and first post is 3pm.
  • 11am: Wear Red Day at Keeneland: Keeneland fans are encouraged to wear red on April 10 to help raise awareness of heart disease: the No. 1 killer of women. The first 3,000 patrons will receive a red dress pin. Throughout Kentucky, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are committed to fighting heart disease and stroke.

  • 5pm: April Food Trucks at Country Boy Brewing (food): Another delicious month of food trucks at the Lexington taproom! Tonight’s food truck is Yamaguchi Noodle Tent.
  • 6pm: Ariat Sip & Shop to Benefit the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance at Ariat (cause): Ariat will host a Sip & Shop in their Lexington, Kentucky store April 10 from 6pm to 8pm to kick off their campaign to benefit the TAA. From April 10 to April 14, Ariat will donate 10% of sales from the Lexington store to the TAA.
  • 6pm: Charcuterie Boards at Cut and Paste Craft Studio (art/crafts): In this class you will turn an 18″ pine circle into the perfect board on which to serve your party food. You’ll start with one of 4 designs (or create your own), trace the pattern, then pull out the wood burners to create a striking and lasting design. Purchase tickets: HERE.
  • 6:15pm: Cooking and Dinner With The Chef at Oscar Diggs (food): Did you ever wonder how Oscar Diggs creates their menus? Did you ever want to learn HOW to build dishes like they do? Here’s your opportunity to learn from one of the masters himself. Chef Walker McQuire is designating a night to teach a select few people how to create a 3 course meal. You’ll get to cook alongside, learn knife skills, and get a better understanding of what goes into creating their outstanding dishes. Cost: $40 – Class, Drinks and Dinner are included in this price.   • 7pm: The Speakeasy Series: Bernadette Madigan-Dugan at John’s Walk/Run Shop: John’s Run/Walk Shop presents the fourth installment in the Speakeasy Series: drink free beer and talk running with us! While you’re here, shop their huge selection of Grand Opening specials and make sure to take something home with you! A portion of their Grand Opening sales from 4/11 – 4/14 will go to supporting the The Living Arts & Science Center!

  • 5pm: Cocktail Pairing Dinner with Samantha Fore at West Main Crafting: Come out on Thursday, April 11, for a wholly unique and memorable dining experience! They are joining with Chef Sam Fore of Tuk Tuk Sri Lankan Bites to bring you a dinner unlike anything anyone has done before. This pairing dinner will focus on what Sam identifies as the central principle of Sri Lankan cuisine: “the search for your personal, perfect bite.   • 6pm: Crafts on Tap – Beer Stein Design at The Living Arts and Science Center (alcohol): Relax with an Evening of Social Crafting. Bring a friend, try out a new skill, enjoy light refreshments and take home your one of a kind creation. All skill levels welcome. Age 21+. Construct your very own handmade ceramic beer stein using basic hand-building techniques and underglaze paints. After your stein is glazed and fired, take it to West 6th Brewery, show off your stein and receive one free pretzel. Light refreshments provided. Tickets are $35 for regular and $30 for member.
  • 6pm: Succulent Wreath DIY at Wilson Nurseries Lexington (class): Custom created by you, with as much help as you like from them, filled with succulents of your choice. This versatile and easy to care for succulent wreath is a living piece of art to green up and liven up your indoor or outdoor space year round. Treat yourself or a friend – you’ll be glad you did!   • 6pm: Big Blue Bunny Night at Fayette Mall: Get your picture taken with the Easter Bunny and the Kentucky Wildcat and Scratch mascots during Big Blue Bunny Night. The Easter Bunny is located in the Dillard’s Court.
  • 6pm: Barrel Head Paint Party at Cut & Paste Studio (art/crafts): You will be provided the following items: paint brushes, 15+ paint color options Danish oil to stain and seal your wood item. A stencil will already be placed on your item so you will be ready to paint and have fun as soon as you arrive! Tickets are required and more details: HERE.
  • 6pm: Golf at The Barn Door Tap Room – Beer and Birdies at Whole Foods: Join us at the pub in your local store to grab a beer and celebrate the start of golf’s most exciting weekend on Thursday, April 11, from 6pm to 8pm.
  • 6pm: Mixed Media Class at create art + play studio (art/crafts): Paint, draw, collage, stamp, sculpt, glue! Mixed media include all types of art materials. In this class kids will learn to combine different art media to create totally original works of art.
  • 7pm: Nostalgic Candy Tasting at Lexington Public Library – Beaumont Branch: A century of candy! Learn what were the most popular candies of each decade for the last 100 years, and taste some candies that were once popular, but that you may have never had before. This program is for adults.   • 7pm: Game Of Thrones Beer Tapping and Trivia at Mr. Brews Tap House (games): Just in time for the show they tap For the Throne Golden Ale for an epic Game of Thrones Trivia! For the Throne is a golden ale co-fermented with pinot grigio and viognier grape juices. Its aroma hints at honeysuckle, toasted grain, pear, and apricot, while its tasting notes are sweet malt and honey dew. It packs 9.5 percent ABV. Hold onto your dragons.
  • 7pm: New Riff Tasting at Whiskey Bear (alcohol): Founded in 2014 by Ken Lewis, a visionary Kentucky liquor retailer and entrepreneur, New Riff Distilling is led by a team of corporate refugees ranging from craft beer to politics and more.   • 7:15pm: Samuel J Comroe at Comedy Off Broadway (comedy): Samuel J. Comroe, a Los Angeles native, is a stand-up comedian who performs at over 100 clubs and colleges annually. He made his TV debut on TBS’ Conan, BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood with Kevin Hart. In 2018 Samuel was a finalist on America’s Got Talent and can currently be seen on America’s Got Talent Champions Edition.  In addition to his TV appearances Sam was recently featured on All Def Digital’s Comedy Originals. He is also the winner of Ricky Gervais’ Comedy Competition, The San Francisco Comedy Competition, and has over 40,000 subscribers on his Youtube Channel. His comedy is made up of the trials and tribulations of living with Tourettes Syndrome since being diagnosed at age six and observational material based on his life experiences.   • 8:30pm: Team Trivia with Bell’s Brewing at Lynagh’s Irish Pub (games): See who knows the most!
  • 9pm: Restless Leg String Band, The Dank Steaks & Stinky Boots at Cosmic Charlie’s (music): Swing on down to the NEW Cosmic Charlie’s on April 11, 2019! Restless Leg String Band will be hosting their friends The Dank Steaks & Stinky Boots String Band all the way from Saranac Lake, NY! Come on out and shake a leg!
  • 9pm: Comedy Show at The Twisted Cork (comedy): Come on out and get twisted with us at The Twisted cork, guaranteed to be the funniest show you will ever see, in a drive thru liquor store.
